Bleu Burgers

Many moons ago, when I had my business in Berlin, I usually went out for lunch not only to eat, but to get away for an hour or so and recharge my battery.  Needless to say that after a few years of eating lunches, I was very familiar with the local restaurants.  One of those on my list was the New York Pickle Deli in Rocky Hill, not a very long drive for me.  Getting to know some very nice people there made the lunch hour pleasant and worth the trip.  I really enjoyed having a deli favorite of mine, liverwurst on pumpernickel with onion and mustard.  This was a real treat for me since Marge frowned on me consuming the cholesterol laden goody, so I rarely had them at home.  Although it’s been nearly twenty years, one menu item still sticks in my memory.  This one was first discovered by my frequent lunch partner my brother Peter.  They called it the Bacon Bleu Burger which consisted of a nice burger with a load of crisp bacon and chunky bleu cheese dressing on a toasted hard roll.

I was going down memory lane with Marge the other day and told her about this burger.  It got her hungry for one and it created an immediate search to locate a local place that served them.  Since the Southington area has enough burger places to choke a horse I thought I would locate many places that served them.  Wrong, wrong, wrong, and I know not why because I couldn’t find anyone in Southington that had them on their menu.  But when it comes to food, I rarely give up the quest.  After much searching I found a place in Kensington that has only been open for eight months. It was called Zack’s Burgers and Shakes. How could you go wrong, we absolutely had to try it?  The opportunity arose yesterday when we found ourselves in the neighborhood and stopped in for lunch.

It didn’t show much promise for me since it was one of those places that I generally dislike.  You have to go to a counter to read the wall menu and place your order.  No waitress, but was told that the food would be delivered when ready.  Plastic forks and knives and paper cups to fill with ice and beverage at a soda vending machine.  I don’t want you to get the wrong idea, but I’m not the fancy sophisticated type who refuses to go to this type of restaurant, ask anyone who knows me, but I consider eating out one of lives pleasures and enjoy relaxing and being waited on. I hoped that the food would still make the trip worthwhile.

After gathering my plastic ware, soda and napkins we waited patiently for our burgers which were called THE BLACK & BLUE BURGER topped with blue cheese, bacon, onion rings and our house made sauce on a toasted sesame seed bun along with sweet potato fries. I’m happy to report that the food did not disappoint. I had a double patty burger which was cooked perfectly along with strips of bacon, nice fried onions, very good mustardy bleu cheese sauce and a very decent sesame roll.  Fries were surprisingly tasty.  All in all, worth the trip…..will go back for another one soon.
